20 Years of Specialist Endometriosis Care

Peter Barton-Smith celebrates 20 years of specialising in endometriosis this month. The journey began at The Royal Surrey County Hospital and a doctorate degree in Endometriosis from 2004, combined with minimally invasive surgery training at The MATTU in Guildford. The journey continued with setting up the first UK Gynae robotic Surgery Programme in 2009 at The Royal Surrey, following training in robotics with John Dulemba in Denton, Texas.

We performed many of the first Gynae robotic procedures in the UK including the first cases for endometriosis. From there, onto establishing a gynae robotic surgery programme for endometriosis in Singapore before returning to London in 2016 to establish The Endometriosis Clinic: the UK's first clinic dedicated to endometriosis and robotics.

8 years on the Clinic flourishes with nearly 1000 women from many countries having passed through the doors for excision surgery. We have set up a paediatric service for 16/17 yearolds, established the first multidisciplinary team in the UK for diaphragmatic disease, and continued to seek the best mutidisciplinary team available to support sufferers with all forms of endometriosis
